Primarily papers of three generations of the Randolph family of Virginia. Includes correspondence, 1817-1840, of Mary Braxton (Randolph) Carter (1800-1864) of "Shirley," Charles City County, Va., concerning family news and her religious views; letters, 1843-1889, of Mary Buckner Thruston (Magill) Randolph (1809-1890) in part describing the impact of the Civil War on her home, "Eastern View," in Fauquier County, Va.; letters, 1860-1865, to Sarah Griffith (Hoxton) Randolph (1840-1923) from her brother, William Hoxton (1844-1876), chiefly concerning his service in the Confederate Army as a member of the Stuart Horse Artillery, and from her sister, Mary Semmes (Hoxton) Randolph (1846-1930), describing social life in Alexandria and Richmond during the Civil War; and papers of Buckner Magill Randolph (1842-1903), including diaries, 1862-1865, detailing his service in the Confederate Army as a member of the 49th Virginia Infantry, an account book, 1874-1877, of student records kept while he conducted a school for boys at "Eastern View," and an 1893 autobiographical sketch of his wartime service. Also includes diaries, 1910-1927, kept by Mary Semmes (Hoxton) Randolph describing daily events at "Redlands," Fauquier County; and diaries, 1899-1970, a farm account book, 1916-1941, and a commonplace book, 1928-1961, containing lists of personal property, all kept at "Redlands" by Roberta Lee Randolph (1873-1978). Other items include letters, 1807-1864, to Sally Winslow Griffith (d. 1864) of Alexandria, Va., from her niece, Eliza Llewelyn (Griffith) Hoxton (1817-1854), regarding family news, and domestic and social life at West Point, N.Y.; and genealogical notes concerning the Randolph family.
